Who We Are

We are fellowship-trained glaucoma specialists — not a large corporate eye-care chain. Inland Glaucoma Center was built to be responsive, personal, and patient-focused, where your vision is managed by the same experienced glaucoma surgeons at every visit.

Together, our surgeons have performed thousands of glaucoma surgeries, laser procedures, and injections across a full spectrum of glaucoma — from routine open-angle disease to the most complex and advanced cases. Both are board-certified and UCLA glaucoma fellowship-trained, and Dr. Shomer serves as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where he teaches glaucoma to the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Our doctors completed subspecialty glaucoma fellowship training at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, one of the top 5 ophthalmology programs in the nation, and bring an Ivy League and UCLA academic foundation to everyday care in the Inland Empire. With more than 20 years of combined experience and thousands of glaucoma procedures performed, our team has the depth of expertise to protect your sight at every stage of the disease.

Same-day appointments are available for glaucoma emergencies, including sudden eye pain, acute angle-closure attacks, halos around lights, and rapid vision changes.

Marc Shomer, MD, PhD — Ophthalmologist

Dr. Marc Shomer, MD PhD, board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma surgeon at Inland Glaucoma Center in Upland, California
Marc Shomer, MD, PhD

UCLA MD-PhD · Jules Stein Residency · Board Certified · Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine at USC

Dr. Marc Shomer is a board-certified ophthalmologist and MD/PhD physician-scientist caring for patients with glaucoma throughout Upland and the Inland Empire. He completed his ophthalmology residency at UCLA’s prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute and brings both surgical excellence and deep scientific insight to glaucoma care.

He earned his bachelor’s degree with Highest Departmental Honors from UCLA, graduating Summa Cum Laude (top 5%), and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was chosen as the UCLA Student Commencement Speaker, then received a full academic scholarship to the UCLA School of Medicine, where he earned both his MD and PhD degrees.

During graduate training he was awarded the National Research Service Award from the NIH, the Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Legislature. His doctoral research in neuroscience focused on neuronal repair in the adult brain, and he later studied stem cells for repairing eye disease in the adult retina.

An Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, Dr. Shomer teaches glaucoma and ophthalmic surgery to the next generation of ophthalmology residents and fellows.

Dr. Shomer’s scientific background bears directly on the future of glaucoma care. His PhD research focused on NOGO, a molecule that blocks the regeneration of nerve fibers (axons) in the central nervous system — the very optic-nerve axons that glaucoma destroys. During his postgraduate training, he studied how stem cells might be used in a model of glaucoma to repair the eye after damage has occurred. Today, there is no way to reverse vision that has already been lost to glaucoma; these two areas of research — axonal regeneration and stem-cell repair — are among the most promising paths toward one day restoring sight, not just preserving it. You can read more about this emerging science on our blog post, Synaptic Regeneration as a Glaucoma Therapy Target. What distinguishes him is that he gives every patient the same quality of care he provides his own family. The proud father of three, he cares not only for his patients’ eyes, but for their overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions About Glaucoma Care

What are the early signs of glaucoma?

Open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, usually has no early symptoms and slowly reduces peripheral (side) vision. Because that vision loss is permanent, regular eye-pressure checks and optic-nerve imaging are the best way to catch it early. Angle-closure glaucoma can cause sudden eye pain, blurred vision, halos around lights, headache and nausea — this is a medical emergency, and same-day appointments are available.

Where is Inland Glaucoma Center located?

We are located at 1298 West 7th Street, Upland, CA 91786, serving patients throughout the Inland Empire including Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Claremont, Montclair, Chino and surrounding communities within about a 45-mile radius. Call 909-315-6891 to schedule.

What glaucoma treatments do you offer?

We provide the full spectrum of glaucoma care: prescription eye drops, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI), and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) including canaloplasty, goniotomy, OMNI, Hydrus, iStent and XEN, as well as trabeculectomy and Ahmed valve procedures when needed.

Are your ophthalmologists board certified?

Yes. Our ophthalmologists are board certified and completed subspecialty training at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, one of the top ophthalmology programs in the nation. Care is available in English and Spanish.

Inland Glaucoma Center is a proud affiliate of Eye MD’s of Inland, proudly serving patients throughout Upland and the Inland Empire.
