Our board-certified ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye examinations to diagnose and manage all types of glaucoma. Glaucoma is generally classified as open-angle or narrow-angle, and can also be characterized by high-pressure or normal-pressure forms.
Our UCLA fellowship-trained ophthalmologist performs a thorough medical history and detailed eye examination, utilizing the latest imaging technologies and functional testing to deliver an accurate assessment and personalized treatment plan for every patient.
Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma. In this form, the eye pressure (intraocular pressure) is often—but not always—elevated, gradually damaging the optic nerve over many years. At our center, we use high-resolution spectral-domain OCT imaging, a technology comparable to an MRI of the eye, to capture detailed 3D images of the optic nerve and retina. This advanced imaging is combined with corneal thickness measurement, intraocular pressure testing (IOP), gonioscopy, and visual field analysis to provide a comprehensive and precise glaucoma evaluation.
We provide the latest technology for the diagnosis and treatment of narrow-angle glaucoma. Using anterior segment OCT, we can precisely measure the intraocular angle to determine your individual risk for angle-closure disease. This advanced imaging is like an MRI of the front of your eye, but it uses safe, gentle light waves instead of radiation. Your evaluation is combined with gonioscopy, corneal thickness measurement, intraocular pressure testing, and a comprehensive optic nerve assessment for a complete picture of your eye health. When appropriate, we also perform laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) to safely and effectively treat narrow angles.
Angle-Closure Glaucoma occurs when the eye’s natural drainage angle becomes blocked, leading to a sudden and dangerous rise in eye pressure. Symptoms can include severe eye pain, blurred vision, halos around lights, headache, nausea, and vomiting. This condition is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Prompt care with medications and often laser or surgical procedures is essential to lower the eye pressure and restore normal fluid drainage to protect your vision.
We provide a full spectrum of glaucoma care, from early treatment to advanced surgical options. Our services include Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI), and a range of prescription eye drop therapies. For patients who require surgical management, we offer minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) such as canaloplasty, goniotomy, OMNI, Hydrus, iStent, and XEN. When necessary, we also perform trabeculectomy (TRAB) and valve procedures such as the Ahmed valve to help control intraocular pressure and preserve vision.
Normal Tension Glaucoma (NTG), also known as Low-Tension Glaucoma, is a form of glaucoma in which optic nerve damage occurs even though eye pressure is within the normal range. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve poor blood flow to the optic nerve or increased sensitivity of the nerve to normal pressure levels. We provide a comprehensive evaluation using high-resolution OCT imaging, visual field testing, and optic nerve analysis to detect early signs of NPG. Treatment may include medications or laser therapy to further lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve from progressive damage.
Dr. Robert Gunzenhauser is a UCLA-trained, board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist with specialized expertise in premium cataract surgery and advanced sub-specialty training in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, graduating cum laude, before obtaining his medical degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine. There, he graduated in the top 10% of his class, earning early induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society as a junior student. He was also recognized with the David Bryan Sloan Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Gunzenhauser completed his ophthalmology residency at UCLA’s world-renowned Jules Stein Eye Institute, following which he was subsequently selected to continue advanced fellowship training in glaucoma at UCLA.
A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Gunzenhauser has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Glaucoma. He has presented his research at ophthalmology conferences across the U.S. and internationally. His clinical and academic interests include early glaucoma detection, both standard and laser-assisted premium cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma procedures, laser-based glaucoma therapies, and advanced surgical management of glaucoma.
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Gunzenhauser enjoys spending time with his wife and family, staying active, and reading non-fiction. He is fluent in English and Spanish and is currently learning Armenian.
Dr. Shomer earned a bachelor’s degree with Highest Departmental Honors from UCLA and graduated Summa Cum Laude(top 5%). He was chosen to be a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honors Society. He was also the UCLA Student Commencement Speaker.
Dr. Shomer was awarded a full academic scholarship from UCLA School of Medicine., where he earned both MD and PhD degrees. While in graduate training at UCLA, he was awarded the National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Health, the Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature Assembly.
His doctoral dissertation research in neuroscience focused on cutting-edge neuronal repair mechanisms in the adult brain. Dr. Shomer later studied the role of stem cells as a possible avenue of repair of eye disease in the adult retina.
Dr. Shomer then completed residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Jules Stein Institute at the UCLA School of Medicine; annually recognized as the Best Ophthalmology Program and Hospital, respectively, west of the Mississippi. He is also Board Certified in Ophthalmology and is a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at Los Angeles County USC Hospital.
Dr Shomer specializes in advanced techniques in cataract surgery and customized premium lens implants. He teaches cataract surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute residency program. He also performs comprehensive ophthalmology including: glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye, eye pain, eye infections, pterygium (carnosidad), eye exams, and eyelid disorders.
What distinguishes Dr. Shomer is that he gives each patient the quality of care that he provides to his own family members. He is the proud father of three beautiful children, and he understands the need to go above and beyond for each of his patients. He is concerned not only with the health of his patients, but also with their entire well-being.
